Low NEET Score: Private MBBS in India vs MBBS Abroad (2026 Reality Check)

In short

A candidate scoring between 140 and 300 marks faces one financial decision: roughly ₹65 Lakhs to ₹1.25 Crore for an Indian private or deemed seat, against roughly ₹25 Lakhs to ₹38 Lakhs for a medical degree in Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan or the Philippines. The cost gap is real. So is the licensing risk, and the two have to be weighed together rather than one at a time.

Parameter-by-parameter comparison

Indian private or deemed MBBS compared with studying abroad
ParameterIndian private / deemedAbroad (Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan)
Total 5.5-year expenditure₹65 Lakhs – ₹1.25 Crore (tuition, hostel and miscellaneous)₹25 Lakhs – ₹38 Lakhs (typically quoted as an all-inclusive package)
Minimum NEET score130 – 350 marks, depending on state and quotaQualifying marks only (50th percentile)
Clinical patient exposureHigh — direct exposure to Indian disease patterns and outpatient volumeModerate to low; a language barrier at the bedside is common
Licensing examinationNExT, familiar to the Indian syllabusNExT plus, in practice, separate screening preparation
InternshipOne-year rotating internship included within the courseTwelve-month internship required at the same foreign institution, and often a further year in India
Language of instructionEnglish throughoutEnglish medium, but the local language is usually needed for clinical postings
Recognition riskNone — NMC-approved seats by definitionThe degree must satisfy every NMC foreign graduate condition, or it cannot be licensed in India

Figures are indicative ranges for the 2026 cycle. Foreign university packages vary widely by institution and by rupee-dollar movement; get any quoted package in writing, itemised, before paying a deposit.

The regulatory factor: NMC foreign graduate rules

Under National Medical Commission regulations a foreign medical degree qualifies its holder to sit the licensing examination in India only if all of the following hold:

  • The course ran at least 54 months (4.5 years), with a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.
  • The medium of instruction was English throughout.
  • The degree grants a licence to practise in the host country, equivalent to what local graduates receive.

A programme that fails any one of these produces a degree that cannot be licensed in India. Verify each point against the university’s own documentation before paying a deposit — a recruitment agent’s assurance is not evidence.

An honest verdict

If your family can fund ₹60–75 Lakhs, an open-state private seat in Uttar Pradesh or Bihar is generally the stronger option: clinical exposure to Indian disease patterns, an internship inside the Indian hospital system, no language barrier at the bedside, and no licensing risk. If the total budget is firmly capped around ₹30 Lakhs, a recognised university abroad is the viable alternative — but the NExT pass rate for foreign graduates is materially lower, and that risk belongs in the arithmetic rather than beside it.
