Just Qualified NEET — What Are Your MBBS Options? (2026)

In short

A just-qualified NEET score — roughly 135–145 marks for General and EWS, 105–115 for SC, ST and OBC — reaches deemed university seats in the mop-up and stray vacancy rounds, at roughly ₹19–26 Lakhs a year. Open-state private seats are largely out of reach at this level. The options are real but narrow, expensive, and depend entirely on having registered early.

Cutoffs are expected closing ranges for the 2026 cycle, compiled from previous rounds — not guarantees. Fees are the advertised annual tuition and change by notification. Verify both on the official counselling portal before locking your choices.

These are the lowest floors in the directory, and reaching them means the final rounds. Treat the list as where to focus, not as a set of seats waiting to be claimed.

The three things that decide whether you get a seat

  1. Register everywhere, early. You cannot enter mop-up or stray vacancy without having registered in the earlier rounds. This is the single most common way candidates at this score lose their last chance, and it is entirely avoidable.
  2. Fill a long choice list. At the qualifying boundary, breadth matters more than preference. A list of five colleges is a list of five ways to be unallotted.
  3. Be ready to report in days. Stray vacancy reporting windows are short. Keep documents and the first-year demand draft ready before the allotment, not after.

The conversation worth having early

At a just-qualified score the available seats are the most expensive ones — roughly ₹95 Lakhs to ₹1.35 Crore across the course. It is worth deciding, before counselling begins, whether your family can genuinely fund that, because the decision is much harder to make well in the two days of a stray vacancy window.

If the answer is no, the alternatives are a repeat attempt at NEET, or BDS, BAMS, BHMS, veterinary science, nursing or allied health courses — several of which admit on the same NEET result. Those are real medical careers, not consolation prizes, and considering them in June is a great deal better than considering them after forfeiting a deposit in October.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get MBBS if I just qualified NEET?

Yes, but narrowly. Deemed universities admit at just-qualified scores in the mop-up and stray vacancy rounds, at roughly ₹19–26 Lakhs a year. You must have registered in the earlier rounds to be eligible for those, and you should expect to report within days of allotment.

What else can I do with a qualified NEET score?

The same NEET result is used for admission to BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, veterinary science and several allied health programmes, all at substantially lower fees than a private MBBS seat. Many candidates at the qualifying boundary find a better outcome in these than in the most expensive MBBS seat available to them.
