In short
Counselling allots seats on all-India rank, not on marks. The relationship between the two changes every year with the difficulty of the paper and the number of candidates, so a score that produced one rank last year can produce a materially different one this year. Use the rank printed on your own NTA scorecard; treat every marks-to-rank chart, including the bands below, as orientation only.
Why the conversion moves
Rank is a position in a queue, not a property of your score. Two things move that queue each year:
- Paper difficulty. An easier paper compresses scores at the top — more candidates score highly, so the same mark sits further down the queue.
- Candidate volume. The NEET pool has grown substantially over the last decade. A larger pool means more candidates above any given score, even if the paper is identical.
This is why a marks-to-rank table from a previous year is a rough guide and never a prediction, and why anyone quoting one to you as a firm figure is overstating what it can tell you.
Indicative bands for the low-score range
| Approximate score | Indicative all-India rank band | What it typically reaches |
|---|---|---|
| 280 – 350 | Roughly 3.5 – 5 lakh | Open-state private colleges from Round 1; most deemed universities |
| 220 – 280 | Roughly 5 – 6.5 lakh | Open-state private in Rounds 1–2; deemed from Round 2 |
| 180 – 220 | Roughly 6.5 – 8 lakh | Open-state private in later rounds; deemed at mop-up |
| 140 – 180 | Roughly 8 – 10 lakh | Deemed universities at mop-up and stray vacancy |
| Just qualified | Roughly 10 lakh and beyond | Deemed universities at stray vacancy only |
Indicative only. These bands describe the general shape of recent cycles, not this year’s result. Your actual rank is printed on your NTA scorecard and is the only figure counselling uses. Do not plan a choice list against an estimated rank when the real one is available.
All-India rank and state rank are different queues
Your all-India rank governs MCC deemed counselling and the all-India quota. State counselling re-ranks the candidates who registered in that state, so your position there can be considerably better than your all-India rank suggests — which is exactly why registering in an open state where you have no domicile can still be worth doing.

Frequently asked questions
What rank do I get with 200 marks in NEET?
Recent cycles have put roughly 200 marks somewhere in the 6.5 to 8 lakh all-India rank band, but this shifts every year with paper difficulty and candidate numbers. Your actual rank is on your NTA scorecard and is the figure counselling uses.
Why is my rank different from a marks-vs-rank chart I saw?
Because rank is a position among that year's candidates, not a fixed property of a score. An easier paper or a larger candidate pool pushes the same mark further down the queue. Charts describe past years and cannot predict the current one.
Is state rank the same as all-India rank?
No. State counselling re-ranks only the candidates registered in that state, so your state position is often better than your all-India rank. This is part of why registering in an open state where you hold no domicile can still improve your chances.
