In short
Advertised annual tuition typically accounts for 55–70% of what a private MBBS degree actually costs. The rest is hostel and mess across five years, a refundable security deposit, university examination fees, and annual miscellaneous charges. A ₹12 Lakhs-a-year college is realistically a ₹65–75 Lakh commitment; a ₹24 Lakhs-a-year deemed university is closer to ₹1.2 Crore.

Ranges across the sector, for planning. Every college publishes its own schedule — get that schedule in writing before you pay anything.
The two that catch families out
The internship year. Tuition covers 4.5 years. The course is 5.5. You still live somewhere during the twelve-month internship, and most fee comparisons quietly omit that year of accommodation.
The counselling security deposit. This is refundable in principle and forfeited in practice more often than families expect. In UP DGME, being allotted a seat in Round 1 and declining to join forfeits the full ₹2,00,000, and entering Round 2 then requires a fresh ₹2,00,000. It is not a penalty for changing your mind — it is a penalty for blocking a seat someone else could have taken.

Three questions to ask in writing before reporting
- What is the complete year-by-year fee schedule, including examination, development and miscellaneous charges?
- Is the annual tuition fixed for the course, or revisable each year — and if revisable, by how much in the last three years?
- Which deposits are refundable, on what conditions, and over what timeframe after completion?
Ask by email and keep the reply. A college that will not put its fee schedule in writing has told you something useful.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of private MBBS in India?
Roughly ₹55–75 Lakhs at the cheapest open-state private colleges, and roughly ₹95 Lakhs to ₹1.35 Crore at deemed universities, counting 4.5 years of tuition and five years of hostel and mess. Refundable deposits sit on top and come back at the end.
Do private medical colleges increase fees every year?
Some do. State fee committees regulate revisions for state-quota private seats; deemed universities set their own fees. Ask explicitly whether the quoted tuition is fixed for the course, and ask what the actual revisions were over the last three years rather than what the policy says.
Is the security deposit refundable?
The counselling security deposit is refundable if you either take up the allotted seat or exit within the permitted window. It is forfeited if you are allotted a seat, accept it, and then fail to report — and in UP DGME there is no free exit from Round 1 at all.
